The Shield Breaks.
Leclerc Wins Silverstone.

Antonelli’s wheel shield failure. Verstappen beached at Stowe. A Safety Car finish that silenced 140,000 fans. Leclerc took the pieces and ran. The championship gap is 25 points. At RedBud, Hunter Lawrence reclaimed the red plate with a 2–1 that reshuffled a title fight separated by three points.

The Shield Breaks. Leclerc Finds Silverstone Salvation.

Charles Leclerc passed polesitter Kimi Antonelli off the line and never looked back. His first win since Austin 2024, his first ever at Silverstone, came in a race that fell apart behind him. Antonelli suffered a left-front wheel shield failure on Lap 41, destroying his ability to turn the car. A five-second penalty for track limits dropped the championship leader to sixteenth. He scored zero points on the day he’d looked most likely to win.

Max Verstappen, running third after a strong recovery drive, spun into the gravel at Stowe on Lap 48 of 52. The Safety Car was deployed. The race never restarted. Silverstone’s 140,000-strong crowd were denied a final-lap shootout by what the FIA later admitted was a “software error” in the restart system.

George Russell, who had pitted under an earlier slow puncture and looked out of contention, inherited second when he stayed out under the Safety Car. Lewis Hamilton crossed the line third despite a five-second penalty for a false start, a post-race stewards’ investigation for a yellow flag infringement resulted in only a reprimand. The championship gap has been cut from 40 to 25 points. Three drivers are now within 32 points of the lead.

The Antonelli Weekend

Saturday: Sprint win (his first) and pole position (1:28.111). Sunday: jumped at the start, ran wide, lost positions, then the wheel shield failed. The gap went from 40 points with a car that was fastest all weekend to 25 points and zero race-day points. Toto Wolff: “A car should not break.”

Red Bull’s Ongoing Crisis

Two rear wing failures in two races. Verstappen spun at Stowe while running third, a potential podium destroyed. He had strong pace all weekend but the car cannot be relied upon. He’s now 103 points off the lead and falling further from the fight.

Hunter Reclaims the Red Plate. RedBud’s First All-International Podium in 53 Years.

Hunter Lawrence overcame a costly last-lap mistake in Moto 1 to deliver another masterclass at RedBud on America’s Independence Day. His 2–1 scorecard delivered a third overall win of the season and, critically, reclaimed the points lead from brother Jett. The elder Lawrence now holds a three-point advantage, 227 to 224, heading into the back half of the championship.

Jorge Prado grabbed the holeshot in both motos and proved his speed is no longer a question. The Red Bull KTM rider went 3–2 for second overall, his best result of the outdoor season. But the story of the day was Jett Lawrence: dominant in Moto 1, where he worked past Prado for a convincing win, then undone in Moto 2 by two separate crashes. The first came chasing Haiden Deegan for second on a fast left-hand sweeper. The second while running eighth. He salvaged fifth in the moto but surrendered the red plate in the process.

For the first time in 53 years, RedBud’s overall podium was composed entirely of international racers: Hunter (Australia), Prado (Spain), and Jett (Australia). Haiden Deegan’s day was compromised by a first-turn crash in Moto 1, relegating the rookie to a 10–3 for sixth overall. He remains third in the championship, 51 points adrift.

250MX, Davies Makes It Three in a Row

Cole Davies continued his dominant run with a 1–2 scorecard for a third consecutive overall win. The New Zealander stalked Star Racing Yamaha teammate Caden Dudney for most of Moto 1 before striking with three laps to go. Jo Shimoda caught and passed Davies late in Moto 2 to take the moto win, and in doing so moved to the top of the 250MX standings on 194 points, four clear of Davies (190) and nine ahead of Levi Kitchen (185). The 250 title fight has three riders separated by nine points with six rounds remaining.

Belgian GP, Spa-Francorchamps (Round 10, July 17–19) & Southwick Pro Motocross (Round 6, July 11)
Spa has historically favoured power and bravery in equal measure. Ferrari will arrive with momentum after Leclerc’s Silverstone win. Mercedes need Antonelli’s car to survive a full race distance. At Southwick, the deep sand plays to consistency over outright speed, and Hunter Lawrence’s three-point lead means every moto matters.
