RACE STORY
When the Star Goes Out,
The Show Carries On
George Russell arrived in Montreal owning the weekend - Sprint pole, Sprint win, Grand Prix pole. Then, on Lap 30, his W17 simply stopped talking to him.
The early laps were anything but processional. McLaren gambled spectacularly and lost - both Norris and Piastri started on intermediate tyres on a bone-dry track. Norris briefly led before the strategy unravelled. Piastri collected a collision penalty for hitting Albon. McLaren scored zero points from both cars.
With the McLarens gone, the race became an intra-Mercedes war. Antonelli pressured Russell relentlessly - took the lead, ran wide, gave it back, attacked again. Five position changes in twenty laps. Then Russell's power unit cut out mid-straight, and the battle became a procession.

"I had everything under control - I just needed time."
-- Lewis Hamilton, on his pursuit of Verstappen
Hamilton secured P2 with a stunning move around the outside of Turn 1 on Verstappen - the kind of improvised brilliance that has defined his career across three decades. Driver of the Day by popular vote, and deservedly so. Ferrari are now just two points behind Mercedes in the Constructors' Championship.
Isack Hadjar took fifth for Red Bull despite two separate penalties - his best result yet. Franco Colapinto was Alpine's quiet hero in sixth, more than doubling his season points tally in one afternoon.

TYRE STRATEGY - DATA: OPENF1
The VSC triggered by Russell's Lap 30 retirement compressed the field into a natural pit window at Laps 30-31. Every front-runner switched Soft to Medium. Verstappen was the outlier - starting on Intermediates and pitting immediately, running a three-stop strategy that cost track position early but preserved tyre life.

PIT STOP ANALYSIS - DATA: OPENF1
Antonelli led the field in at Lap 31 with a clean 25.1s stop. Hamilton followed at 25.9s. Leclerc's longer 30.1s explains much of the 44-second gap he finished with. Verstappen's Lap 2 dump of the intermediates was a swift 23.4s.

THE VERDICT
Three Things We're Still Thinking About
1. Kimi Antonelli is the real thing. Four wins from five races. Fastest lap. A 43-point lead. The 19-year-old is not just inheriting Toto Wolff's faith - he's vindicating it race by race.
2. Lewis Hamilton is alive in this championship. "Probably better without the simulator" - a line that sounds flippant but lands with real weight. Ferrari are two points behind Mercedes and Hamilton is carrying the momentum.
3. McLaren have serious questions to answer. Intermediates on a dry track. A collision. A reliability failure. Zero points from two cars. The reigning champions had a race they could have won.

The championship gap was 18 points going into Montreal. It is 43 coming out. Six rounds remain before the summer break.
